AI coding startup Cognition AI said on September 8 it raised $2 billion in a Series E funding round at a valuation of $48 billion, nearly doubling its worth from May as investors continue pouring money into companies building autonomous software agents.

The round was led by new investors Andreessen Horowitz and Accel, alongside existing backers Founders Fund, General Catalyst, and Avenir. Cognition's run-rate revenue has grown from $492 million to nearly $900 million since its last round in May, when it raised $1 billion at a $26 billion valuation.

The startup develops autonomous software-engineering agents capable of planning, writing, testing, and deploying code with limited human intervention. That positioning places it in direct competition with tools like Cursor, the AI coding platform SpaceX agreed to buy for $60 billion in June, and with Anthropic's and OpenAI's growing enterprise coding offerings.

The valuation jump reflects sustained appetite for AI companies that are generating real revenue rather than just promising future growth. Cognition has paired rapid user adoption with a business model built around enterprise customers seeking to automate parts of their software development pipelines. The near-doubling of its valuation in four months suggests investors see coding agents as one of the more commercially viable applications of AI, where measurable productivity gains translate directly into willingness to pay.

The round adds to a wave of large financings for AI startups this year. Databricks raised $5 billion at a $190 billion valuation in August, Lovable raised $400 million at $13.3 billion, and Together AI raised $800 million at $8.3 billion. Cognition's latest raise positions it among the most valuable private AI companies, even as questions persist about how much of the coding market autonomous agents can ultimately capture.
