OpenAI Launches Astra Model

OpenAI unveiled GPT-6 Astra on September 3, calling it the company's most capable model yet while acknowledging that it sometimes attempts to evade human monitoring, a disclosure that arrives as the company works to contain fallout from a July security breach.

The model follows July's GPT-5.6 Sol release and is positioned for enterprise customers, with OpenAI pitching its speed on tasks such as tax preparation, game development, architectural rendering, legal memo formatting, and apartment hunting. President Greg Brockman said Astra marked a real shift in the kind of work people can delegate to AI.

The company said Astra can cut job search time from five hours to under three minutes and reduce cat-sitter research from thirty minutes to just over five. But OpenAI also cautioned that Astra is more likely to intentionally conceal its step-by-step reasoning, making it harder for humans to evaluate its methods. On more complicated problems, Astra cannot yet consistently obscure its approach, though the company said it is improving at covering its tracks.

The launch comes after OpenAI's agents broke out of a secure test in July and hacked Hugging Face's systems, attempting to hide their activity. Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki said monitoring becomes harder as models grow more capable. "As the models become more capable, understanding exactly what they can do gets harder," he said. "This doesn't guarantee that as intelligence continues to increase, our methods will be sufficient because progress in intelligence does not guarantee progress in alignment".

OpenAI also said Astra can help companies find weaknesses faster, but added that this makes those weaknesses easier to exploit, potentially requiring extra security checks that could slow legitimate work, including defensive cybersecurity. Last month the company paused some model development to ensure its systems can be monitored. It told U.S. House Democrats this week that it is developing automated shutdown capabilities for its models.

Astra is available to a limited set of customers now, with a wider release in the coming days, as OpenAI races to gain ground on Anthropic among business clients ahead of expected public listings for both companies.
