Coursera has invested $100 million in LearnVector, a new artificial intelligence education startup founded by the online learning platform's co-founder Andrew Ng. The deal, announced on July 28, gives Coursera a one-third stake and values the company at roughly $300 million.
Ng, a prominent AI researcher and former Google Brain chief, said LearnVector will develop courses that help white-collar workers stay relevant as AI automates more cognitive tasks. He framed the venture as a direct challenge to fears that AI will eliminate large numbers of jobs. "I believe in the opposite," he told Reuters. "AI will be the greatest force in accelerating human development if we do it right".
LearnVector will use AI models from multiple third-party providers to build individualized learning paths that track progress and become more advanced as users gain proficiency. The company expects to launch its first courses early next year, selling to corporations, governments, and higher education institutions. Coursera plans to partner with LearnVector to co-develop and co-sell its courses.
The investment represents about 13 percent of Coursera's $790 million in available cash as of March, a significant commitment to a startup that has yet to finalize its curriculum or pricing. The bet reflects both confidence in Ng, whose earlier DeepLearning.AI venture became a widely used resource for AI education, and a conviction that online learning platforms will play a central role in retraining workers as AI reshapes professional work. Ng said the goal is to shift skill mixes rather than replace people. "There will be a need for people to shift their skill mix as AI automates a subset of work, but still leaves plenty of work for people to do," he said.
