The End of ‘AI-Powered’: When Every Product Has It

There was a brief moment when adding AI to a product still felt like a differentiator. That moment is ending fast. McKinsey’s 2024 global survey found that 72% of organizations are now using AI in at least one business function, while 65% say they are regularly using generative AI in at least one function, up sharply from the previous year. (McKinsey & Company, 2024


Once that level of adoption sets in, AI stops looking like a special layer and starts behaving more like a baseline expectation. The product question changes from “Does it have AI?” to “Does the AI actually make this better?” That is a much less forgiving question, because it forces companies to confront that most users do not care about AI as a branding exercise. 


They care whether the product saves time, reduces friction, improves decisions, or removes work they did not want to do in the first place. And once every company is adding copilots, summaries, recommendations, automation layers, and synthetic content tools, the market gets crowded with features that sound impressive but feel strangely interchangeable. McKinsey’s findings point in that direction too: while organizations are deploying generative AI across more functions, reported use is still concentrated, and only two use cases in marketing and sales were reported by 15% or more of respondents, which suggests that broad excitement is still outrunning deep, distinctive utility (McKinsey & Company, 2024).


This is where things get more interesting, and more uncomfortable. When every product becomes an AI product, product strategy gets dragged out of the demo layer and back into the reality layer. Suddenly the hard questions matter again. Is the system reliable, is it useful in context, does it fit an existing workflow, does it create more work than it removes, and what happens when it is wrong? 


AI failure is not experienced like ordinary software failure. A broken button is annoying. A confident but inaccurate answer, a false summary, a bad recommendation, or a hallucinated workflow step can quietly distort a user’s judgment. McKinsey found that 44% of respondents say their organizations have already experienced at least one negative consequence from generative AI use, with inaccuracy reported most often, followed by cybersecurity and explainability (McKinsey & Company, 2024).


That is why the next phase of AI competition is unlikely to be won by the companies that merely add the most features.  It will be shaped by the companies that build products people can trust enough to keep using.  Pew’s 2025 research found that 51% of U.S. adults feel more concerned than excited about the increased use of AI in daily life, while just 11% feel more excited than concerned, and 55% say they want more control over how AI is used in their lives (Pew Research Center, 2025).


If users are approaching AI with caution, then every AI product is now operating under a trust deficit from day one. Pew also found that 59% of the public have little or no confidence in U.S. companies to develop and use AI responsibly, which means product teams are no longer shipping into a neutral environment (Pew Research Center, 2025). 


They are shipping into skepticism. And skepticism changes what counts as good product design.  It means explainability is not a nice add-on, restraint is not a weakness, and clear boundaries may become more valuable than maximal capability. 


It also means the old software instinct to keep piling on features starts to break down. If every surface becomes “AI-powered,” users get hit with a flood of suggestions, summaries, prompts, auto-drafts, predictions, and assistant behaviors they did not explicitly ask for. At some point, the intelligence layer starts feeling less like help and more like ambient managerialism inside the product. 


And that is the paradox. The more common AI becomes, the less impressive its presence becomes on its own. Ubiquity cheapens novelty. When every product becomes an AI product, AI stops being the story and product judgment becomes the story again. 


So what happens when every product becomes an AI product? First, the AI label loses value. Then the actual product work begins, which includes trust, usability, accuracy, workflow fit, restraint, and accountability. That is probably healthier than the phase we are leaving behind. It means AI will finally have to compete on what it changes, not what it promises.
