OpenAI has launched Study Mode, a free learning feature in ChatGPT designed to support students across India. The new mode is available immediately and works in 11 Indian languages, helping students study subjects like math, science, and history in a simplified, structured format.
Key Updates: What’s New?
Study Mode offers a dedicated space for students to ask questions and receive subject-specific help.
The experience is text-only. It does not include web browsing, images, or third-party plugins.
Students can select their grade level and subject area to get responses that align with school-level content.
The mode supports Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Urdu, and Odia.
OpenAI has collaborated with Indian education partners such as Teach For India, Educational Initiatives, and Sri Aurobindo Society to inform the design and accessibility of the feature.
Why It Matters
India has one of the largest student populations in the world, with more than 260 million learners in the K–12 segment alone. Access to qualified teachers, quality learning material, and multilingual support continues to be a challenge, especially outside major urban centres.
With this release, OpenAI is making structured AI-based learning tools available at no cost. By focusing on a localized, curriculum-aligned approach, Study Mode may help reduce learning gaps and bring more consistency in the quality of support students receive.
Designed for Safe and Focused Use
Study Mode is not connected to live internet content and does not allow for third-party extensions. This design reduces distractions and minimizes the risk of exposure to incorrect or unsafe material. The responses are optimized for learning, with clear and concise explanations that adapt to the learner’s level.
