OpenAI's DevDay 2025, held in San Francisco, marked a transformative leap in AI development, unveiling groundbreaking tools and features poised to redefine user and developer experiences.
Introducing the ChatGPT App Store
OpenAI has launched its own version of an app store, integrated directly into ChatGPT. This move aims to revolutionise how users discover and interact with digital services using natural language. With over 800 million weekly users, ChatGPT is evolving from a chatbot into a comprehensive conversational platform for personalised and interactive apps. The platform includes a software development kit (SDK), monetisation tools, and an app directory with featured listings, encouraging the creation and distribution of new AI-powered applications. Initial app partners include major brands like Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow, with more expected later, such as Uber, Target, and Peloton.
AgentKit: Empowering AI Agent Development
OpenAI introduced AgentKit, a comprehensive toolkit designed to assist developers and enterprises in creating AI agents from initial prototype stages to full production. This release is part of OpenAI’s broader effort to streamline and empower the development of sophisticated AI applications. Along with this release, OpenAI also introduced updates to its Codex model, which is designed to improve code generation and assistance capabilities.
Pulse: Personalised AI at Your Fingertips
Pulse is a personalisation tool that learns from users' transcripts and connected apps, such as calendars and emails, to deliver daily tailored updates—ranging from workout plans and language lessons to restaurant recommendations or news briefings. Although advertising within Pulse is under discussion, OpenAI executives emphasised that there are currently no concrete plans to introduce ads. However, they did not rule out the possibility, suggesting that carefully implemented, relevant ads could be beneficial. Pulse is only available to Pro users due to its high computational demands.
Developer-Focused Enhancements
OpenAI's DevDay 2024 focused on empowering developers and showcasing community stories, signalling a shift in strategy as the AI landscape becomes increasingly competitive. The company unveiled four major innovations at the event: Vision Fine-Tuning, Realtime API, Model Distillation, and Prompt Caching. These new tools highlight OpenAI's strategic pivot towards empowering its developer ecosystem rather than competing directly in the end-user application space.
These advancements signify OpenAI’s continued push to equip developers with powerful tools for building more useful and capable AI systems.
