OpenAI, in collaboration with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Microsoft, and Anthropic, has launched the National Academy for AI Instruction—a five-year initiative to train 400,000 K–12 teachers across the U.S. in responsible AI use.

With over $25 million in combined funding, the program will offer online courses, in-person workshops, and credentialing opportunities. A flagship campus opens in Manhattan this fall, with plans to expand nationwide.

The academy aims to equip educators to use AI tools effectively while addressing critical concerns like bias, transparency, and student privacy.

“Human beings, not machines, are in charge of education.” – Randi Weingarten, AFT President

This initiative marks a major step toward integrating ethical AI into classrooms—by empowering teachers first.
