In a groundbreaking use of responsible AI, India is leveraging satellites and machine learning to map urban heat risk down to the building level. The effort is a response to rising temperatures and worsening heatwaves.
How It Works:
Models analyze roof material, building height, land use, and satellite imagery.
Partners include IIT Mandi, SEEDS, Chintan, and SEDAC (NASA).
City-specific heat maps are being used to guide local Heat Action Plans.
RAIF Take:This is AI for good in action—combining ethics, inclusion, and impact. These models can save lives when integrated into policy and planning, not just prediction.
