Google Unveils Gemini 4 Argon After Delays

Alphabet's Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, its first frontier AI model in more than seven months, as the company seeks to close a gap with OpenAI and Anthropic (Reuters, 2026).

The model is larger than Google's previous Pro line and is designed for complex workloads in software engineering, legal and financial work, and cybersecurity defense. A company spokesperson said Argon is comparable to OpenAI's Astra and Anthropic's Opus on key coding and cyber benchmarks. In a press release, Google reported better marks than both rivals on several industry benchmarks, though it remained behind on two of the four coding-related tests it included (Reuters, 2026).

Google is providing Argon to select cybersecurity partners and is participating in the Trump administration's voluntary pre-release model access process. It did not give a timeline for public release. The staged approach follows similar decisions by OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have limited their most capable models to vetted partners due to security concerns (Reuters, 2026).

The model comes after months of internal upheaval. Google no longer plans to release Gemini 3.5 Pro, which CEO Sundar Pichai originally said would arrive in June. The company overhauled its DeepMind AI lab, with founder Demis Hassabis stepping aside and several Gemini leaders leaving. In recent months, Google has shifted its messaging from touting Gemini's cutting-edge capabilities to highlighting its cost advantage compared to competitors (Reuters, 2026).

Argon's release positions Google back in the frontier race, though the decision to withhold it from the public reflects the caution that now surrounds the most powerful AI systems. The company has not said when broader access will arrive.
