Google Targets Legal Sector with Gemini Expansion

Google expanded its Gemini Enterprise platform on August 25 with tools designed for lawyers and law firms, a push into a legal market that has become one of the fastest adopters of generative AI.

The new offering, Gemini Enterprise for Legal, integrates with legal software and data platforms used by firms and includes AI agents that handle specialized legal and administrative tasks with limited human oversight. Google said the platform is built to keep sensitive client data secure and confidential.

The expansion is part of a broader effort by Alphabet to sell Gemini Enterprise to specific industries. Google also introduced tools for financial services and plans additional sector-specific products. Google Cloud has become one of Alphabet's fastest growing businesses.

Large law firms have been forming partnerships with AI providers and, in some cases, building their own systems. Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields and Williams & Connolly are among the firms working with Google on the new legal offering. Jonathon Soler, Weil Gotshal's co-managing partner, said clients increasingly expect lawyers to be using AI and taking advantage of its efficiencies.

Google faces competition from Anthropic and others that have expanded enterprise offerings into legal work. Thomson Reuters, which owns Reuters News, launched its own large language model on Monday, built on its Westlaw legal research content. The legal AI market is still in early stages, according to a Deloitte report, but law firms are investing heavily.
