In a firm stance on digital governance, the European Union has rejected calls from major tech players—including Alphabet, Meta, and Mistral AI—to delay implementation of the EU AI Act. The plea to "stop the clock" on key regulatory provisions was turned down, with the European Commission reiterating that responsible innovation cannot come at the cost of public safety and rights.

The rejected appeal reflects growing tensions between regulatory authorities and private AI developers over how AI systems, especially foundation models like LLMs, should be governed. While the industry cited risks of overregulation, the EU emphasized that rules are essential for building trust and ensuring transparency, fairness, and accountability in AI.

At RAIF, we view this as a critical moment in global AI governance. This decision underscores the importance of aligning innovation with ethical responsibility. Our mission remains clear: support organizations—especially SMBs—in navigating evolving standards through assessments, consulting, and readiness tools for Responsible AI compliance.
